Fissure sealants, space maintainers and more

Fissure sealants

Fissures are the grooves on the chewing surfaces of molars. They cannot be cleaned completely and are therefore hotspots for tooth decay. After thorough cleaning, a sealant can effectively protect a decay-free tooth surface.

Space maintainers

Space maintainers are used when baby molars are lost too early.

An orthodontist can make removable or fixed versions.

The appropriate option must be chosen individually.

The joint statement of the DGZMK(in German), DGKiZ(in German) and DGKFO(in German) on indications and design is available here(PDF in German).

Baby-tooth crowns (“knight's armour” or “sparkle tooth”)

Prefabricated baby-tooth crowns are silver-coloured stainless-steel caps. For severely damaged baby molars worth preserving, they represent a final attempt to retain the tooth for longer.

For children, we use names such as “knight's tooth”, “sparkle tooth” or “princess tooth”.
