What does statutory health insurance cover?

Prevention (IP-Leistungen)

From a child's sixth birthday, German statutory health insurers cover individual preventive services (individualprophylaktische Leistungen, IP-Leistungen) twice a year:

  • Recording oral hygiene status (Mundhygienestatus, IP1)
  • Oral health education (Mundgesundheitsaufklärung, IP2)
  • Local fluoride application (lokale Fluoridierungsmaßnahmen, IP4)
  • Fissure sealing of permanent molars (Fissurenversiegelung, IP5)

General anaesthesia

For anxious children whose pain cannot be eliminated by another approach, German statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenkasse) covers treatment under general anaesthesia up to their 12th birthday.

In exceptional cases, insurers also reimburse treatment after the 12th birthday.

Baby-tooth crowns

Prefabricated silver-coloured steel crowns are fully covered by statutory health insurance (Kassenleistung).

For large defects, they are the most durable restoration.

Fillings

The formerly common material amalgam is no longer available and may no longer be used throughout Europe.

German statutory insurers require sufficient, economical and appropriate care (ausreichende, wirtschaftliche und zweckmäßige Versorgung), and therefore pay only for self-adhesive materials such as glass-ionomer cement fillings (GIZ) and prefabricated baby-tooth crowns.

For quality and durability, we use a high-quality adhesively bonded composite filling material.

To minimise the likelihood of repeat treatment in a child's mouth, we rely on this material, with which we have had good experience for over 20 years.
