The first dental visit
– when nothing is wrong, and precisely because nothing is wrong –
“Happiness is no happiness without children, and children are not children without love”
General information
It is never too early for the first dental visit, but often too late.
We would like to offer the first advice about dental health during pregnancy. According to recent studies, information at this stage significantly improves the future dental health of your child.
An appointment should be made no later than when the first tooth appears.
The first visit is for information alone and is therefore particularly important for you as parents.
A dentist's role is to prevent the widespread disease of tooth decay, rather than act as a “defect-focused mechanic” repairing or removing damaged baby teeth.
When children meet the dentist at preventive appointments as someone who cares for their teeth, they learn that prevention is the right path towards a healthy dental future.
The best time of day for baby-tooth treatment
Parents often underestimate how the time of day affects a child's behaviour during dental treatment.
We achieve the greatest success in the morning between 8:00 and 12:00.
Children are usually rested, alert and ready to cooperate at these times; dental treatment can otherwise be stressful for them.
Do's and don'ts
Keep dental-visit days free from additional pressures, such as school exams. Make sure you and your child are rested and healthy, with clear airways and no infections or childhood illnesses.
The less fuss you make about the dental visit, the better.
Avoid well-meant reassurances such as:
- “It won't take long …”
- “It won't hurt …”
- “You don't need to be afraid here …”
Parents in the treatment room
Parents are always welcome at our practice.
For babies, toddlers and preschool children, parents' presence provides comfort and security and supports the dentist during examinations and treatment.
As children get older, we recommend encouraging them to enter the treatment room on their own. This helps them focus on treatment and allows us to build trust.
